The Zen Brother Story:

Lighting the Path to Healing

Zen Brother was born out of a simple, universal need: the need for a space to focus, a moment to breathe, and an anchor for the soul.

Zen Brother is dedicated to lighting the way toward generational healing. When you support us, you’re not just buying a candle; you’re funding the necessary conversation and the tangible support that helps our brothers feel seen, heard, and whole.

THE SPARK:

finding The Anchor

For years, our founder, Dr. Milmon F. Harrison, sought a reliable way to create an atmosphere conducive to his best work and deepest meditation. He was drawn to the ancient, transformative power of scent, but traditional methods felt out of reach.

The answer emerged in the form of a simple, beautiful solution: the scented candle. The ritual of lighting the wick—watching the flame catch and the fragrance bloom—was more than just ambiance. It became a cue. It became a powerful, physical anchor used to mark a time of intentional practice, prayer, and self-reflection.

This simple act of lighting a candle evolved into a personal foundation for living one’s “best life.”

The Calling:

The Unnamed Pain

Dr. Harrison’s personal search for peace soon gave way to an undeniable, urgent calling to address a deeper crisis.

He recognized the persistent, heavy truth: The Black and Brown male community is not okay. In the face of systemic oppression, police violence, and sustained trauma—exacerbated by events like the murder of George Floyd and the pressures of the pandemic—mental health struggles have reached epidemic levels. And all men and boys can benefit from an intervention.

This reality is not abstract for us. We feel it personally, witnessing generational trauma being passed down, the silent suffering of loved ones, our own mental health struggles, and the devastating loss of suicide in our close circles. For too long, the only tools available for coping were silence, self-medication, or, tragically, anger and inflicting pain on those closest to us.

At the core of the problem isn’t a lack of strength, but a lack of permission. Permission to be vulnerable. Permission to seek help. Permission to heal.

The pledge:

The “Why” of Zen Brother

Zen Brother exists to close this gap between need and access. We have a two-fold mission wrapped in purpose:

1. Products as Tools for Intentional Self-Care: We create premium scented candles that are intentionally crafted to be more than just home decor. They are wellness tools. By tying a specific scent to your daily practice—whether it’s meditation, prayer, setting an intention, journaling, or a moment of reflection—we help you build robust habits and make self-care a non-negotiable rhythm of life.

2. A Movement for Mental Healing: We are committed to driving a paradigm shift in our community by working to:

  • De-stigmatize Asking for Help: We promote the narrative that seeking support is an act of courage and strength.
  • Share Vital Resources: We highlight helpful, uplifting literature and resources, such as the books The Invisible Ache and Self-Care for Black Men, to equip our community with knowledge and connection.
  • Support the Pipeline: We help address the critical need for more trauma-informed Black and Brown male mental health professionals.
